What is it?

The initials EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a type of psychotherapy treatment. Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories. 

How Does it Work?

EMDR therapy works in that it can help you feel safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.


There are three parts: Past, Present and Future.  The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing. 

Present Situation

The second part that can help people who use EMDR Therapy techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your PTSD.  These triggers might be in your environment or from thoughts and images that enter your mind, reminding you of the trauma as if it were as fresh as when it took place.

What About The Future?

The third part involves using imagery. This imagery consists of picturing possible future events that can help you to obtain the skills necessary for reconstructing how you want to react to situations. 

What Problems can be Helped with EMDR?

There are several problems and symptoms that can be handled by using the teachings of EMDR. Traumatic events such as sexual and physical abuse can be successfully treated including rape. 


Not everyone grieves in the same manner. Losing someone that you care about can be a traumatic event that can cause people to become stuck.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

What is it?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave.


This therapy can be conducted either, online or face to face.  Initially up-to 10 CBT sessions are recommended.  Additional sessions may be advised, depending on the severity of the condition.

How does it work?

CBT is a psychological therapy that explores a persons, thoughts, feelings, physical, sensations and actions. It Is understood that these are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle (See diagram on the left).


CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.


Sometimes people can get stuck in a pattern of behaviour that is quite self-defeating and stops them being the version of themselves they want to be.

What about the future?

CBT has been shown to be an effective way of treating a number of different mental health conditions. Depression, anxiety, OCD, Panic and Trauma are just some of the conditions that can be treated.  The eventual aim of therapy is to teach you to apply the skills you’ve learnt during treatment to your daily life.

Behavioural Activation

Behavioural Activation (BA) is a psychological therapy and is an extremely effective treatment for depression.  When you feel depressed or anxious, you may be less likely to do the things you enjoy or avoid other potentially pleasurable activities.  BA seeks to increase your daily activity with sources of reward by helping you become more focused and work towards a structured therapy goal.  This approach allows you to work cooperatively with the therapist to understand the underlying issues behind your depression.  BA exercises will be the staple part of your therapeutic process and will significantly improve your chances of recovery.  There is good evidence supporting Behavioural Activation as being helpful for many people with both severe and milder forms of depression, and therefore it is recommended by NICE.

Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for the treatment and alleviation of a variety of physical and psychological symptoms. Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a wide range of issues like fears and phobias, anxiety and stress, panic attacks, insomnia, lack of self-confidence, weight management, smoking cessation and even NICE recommendation for physical conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  This treatment allows you to experience often quite deep levels of relaxation and so helps to reduce levels of stress and anxiety.   Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based therapy, with over 70,000 research references worldwide.  It requires that the client be committed to change and prepared to make the effort to make that change a reality. Hypnotherapy sessions are generally customised to your individual needs and wants, and your beliefs are respected at all times.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and psychotherapy play a crucial role in improving the health and wellbeing of our society.  Counselling and psychotherapy can help resolve emotional, psychological and relationship issues. Clients may be experiencing difficult and distressing events in their lives, such as bereavement, divorce, mental health problems or life concerns.  Therapy may involve talking about life events, feelings, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour.  Counselling and psychotherapy involves a series of formal sessions where the therapist and the client talk about the client’s issues and feelings. Even short-term therapy typically involves six to 12 sessions.

Military and Complex Trauma Therapy
