Glen’s Transitional Journey!

I retired from my Military career in 2018 during my time in the regular Army and joined Click Therapies 6-months after my exit date.  Early on it was very obvious that my attempts to adjust to a healthier work-life balance in civvy street was a challenge. The team at Click Therapies has not only supported me but they have also supported my family through the transition to civilian life. Click Therapies has allowed me the flexibility to spend more time with my family as well as having a working routine that allows me to engage in other commitments with the reserve forces.

I have to say they have been an extremely helpful and supportive service since I first joined, and I cannot imagine working anywhere else. When I first retired, I transferred into the reserve forces and enrolled in a specialist Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) course with my retirement lump sum. Initially, I was employed as a clinician and the service was extremely flexible with my working hours and always took into account my university study periods and my reserve commitment days which included 2-weeks every year to attend the annual camp.

In addition to this, the clinical team at Click Therapies allocated clients for me that would meet the requirements of my CBT course, so I was actively employed in a manner that supported my clinical development. Upon completion of my course, I was allowed to further develop my working role to utilise my military experience in supporting not only veterans clinically but supporting the Armed Forces community by using my military and clinical knowledge to deliver supervision and guidance to non-clinicians supporting vulnerable veterans in the community

Working with Click Therapies has always been a positive experience for me in that you are fully supported as a clinician, a serving reservist, and a veteran whilst also allowing the autonomy and flexibility to work in a manner that benefits me as an individual. I have also had the opportunity to support newer clinicians and other veterans and their families through the same process which is not just supported but actively encouraged. At Click Therapies, we all have a say in the service delivery and are always supported in any innovations we may suggest such as continuing professional development delivery, specialist training, and suggestions for service improvement.

You Can Allow The Change You Desire https://clicktherapies.com/you-can-allow-the-change-you-desire/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 17:36:05 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51681

What do I mean by that, you can allow change? Often we as humans can become so bogged down with life, so distracted by day to day things that we either lose focus and go off track. Or we are subjected to ‘Nay-Sayers’ who try to tell us that we cannot achieve that which we have set out to do.

The latter can cause us to feel down in the dumps and beaten. With this comes a resistance inside us to our own positive change. What do you think might happen if this was to occur inside of you? We turn around and very quickly scurry back to our former state of being, here we might feel safe if not low in mood or too anxious to venture out.

That said you will have denied yourself the experience of creating your desired state. How will you feel when you realise that you have returned to your former state? I guess you may feel defeated, you may blame others, you may feel you had false hope. The reality is though that you are responsible for your own change and personal transformation.

It is you who is going to create this change into your life and it is you who will experience the feelings and thoughts of failure if you decide to turn around to your former state.

What am I saying here?

Well you have to allow change to happen if you want it to take place in your life! You have to be open to the change you desire, be willing to take whatever action steps are necessary to get you there. Be open to any opportunity so that you can recognise it when it presents itself to you. You have to be willing to access the support resources we have discussed previously. Resources such as setting goals or challenging your thoughts and taking action.

Once you have accessed them you have to practice them daily, success cannot be guaranteed if you don’t. You have to take action in moving yourself forward each and every day (no matter how small that action maybe). If you know that there will be people who disapprove of what you are doing, don’t tell them until you are there and you have completed your journey. Do not allow them the chance of becoming the ‘Nay-Sayers’.

Do not hang on to the thought of the thing you desire, don’t become obsessed by your goal. Set an intention imagine it happening feel it and then let go. You could do this regularly.

When you do all of this you will find that you begin to allow change to happen and gradually you may begin to notice results….mood may lift, anxiety may lessen and you might even begin to feel more like the person you desire to be.

How fast would these results have occurred had you not taken the necessary steps? I would think not very fast at all, assuming you started the journey in the first place! LET GO – ALLOW CHANGE TO HAPPEN!

Military & Veteran Support https://clicktherapies.com/military-veteran-support/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 18:47:00 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=52082

For many military personnel and veterans, training for and deploying on military duties of any type means potentially coping with symptoms of mental and physical ill health. Managing this can have a significant impact on themselves, their friends, and their family members.

Whatever strengths, skills, and resources they have been taught in the military, the fact is “they are not robots, they are humans” and there is a risk of being part of something they could not have been prepared for.  It is important to understand that many military personnel and their families are indoctrinated into a military lifestyle that offers a level of security, housing, community, financial stability, and comradery, and this life is often very different from the civilian population.  It can come at a cost of spending time away from their roots and constant relocation. They are also trained with a particular way of thinking and working which allows them to do what they do and see what they see, and this is very different to what is required as a civilian.

Click therapies is a leading online psychological service that works in partnership with a number of national charities and NHS organisations supporting veterans and their families who are faced with the day-to-day challenges of their mental health. Our team of mental health practitioners have extensive experience working within the military, veteran, and NHS services.  Many of our team are ex-military mental health clinicians who have deployed on operational tours themselves.  Our team strive to improve mental health awareness and positive recovery throughout the veteran communities.

[CASE STUDY] My Journey to Health With Click Therapies Online Video Therapy https://clicktherapies.com/case-study-my-journey-to-health-with-click-therapies-online-video-therapy/ Thu, 19 Nov 2020 13:33:12 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51675

When PTSD comes, it turns your whole life around. One minute I was a woman with a successful career and an interesting life, full of travel, fun and love. The next I’d change into a fearful, frightened person, frozen and hyper-vigilant, scared of shadows and waking in the night with nightmares.

I’d been working in international organisations, often in conflict zones, dealing with presidents and foreign ministers, giving interviews to international media when crises hit. My life was wound up with my career, but I knew that really I was running – running away from the difficult years of my childhood: from the years when I was forced into a sexual relationship with a controlling, possessive and difficult adult.

I found Click Therapies at the point where life became really difficult. I chose them because of their expertise in working with combat veterans, and because it would allow me to work in English without having to travel.

I accessed my first online video sessions with great apprehension. This was something I had carried for a long, long time; a dark hole in my soul that had left me with periodic bouts of physical pain and with a constant feeling of inadequacy, sadness and ….yes, trauma.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a strange process. The idea that a sequence of eye movements or taps – much easier online – can cure years of trauma is an unlikely one. And yet, it works.  Chris, my therapist, gently guided me through all the steps, always by my side, reassuring me. It took a total of two months for me to rid myself of ghosts that had haunted me for years. I realised how much my body had held onto – physically, mentally and spiritually – and the sessions gave me the skills I needed for my brain to be able to process the past and give me the calm knowledge that my future is one of power, independence and choices.

It is not an easy process. I was wise enough to give myself time, and lucky enough to be on a break from work at the point I took the therapy. But it is truly miraculous how, with the help of Chris and his expert team (including Bella the dog!) I so very quickly found the path back to health.

4 Psychological Needs to Help Deal With Conflict https://clicktherapies.com/4-psychological-needs-to-help-deal-with-conflict/ Thu, 19 Nov 2020 13:02:01 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51655

Internal conflict, conflict within yourself, reflects the difference between what you really feel and what you are able or choose to do about it. Interpersonal conflict occurs between you and another person when what they do or say is different to what you feel and vice-versa.

Everyone has four basic psychological needs. These are the need to be valued, to be in control, the need for self esteem or self worth, and lastly the need for consistency or stability.

1. The need to be valued or appreciated by others is a basic psychological requirement

You want others to recognize your worth and appreciate your contributions. You are more motivated when your contributions are recognized. When you feel unappreciated, taken advantage of, or taken for granted your need to be appreciated and valued has been violated and this can trigger a response of fear, anger or frequently both.

2. The need to be in control

Being in control is important for everyone, but more for some than others. The more insecure you feel about yourself, the more controlling you may become. On the other hand, if you feel secure and confident about yourself, then your need to control others will reduce.

Whenever you have to deal with an over controlling person remember their need to control comes from their insecurity. Make them feel secure and their need to control will normally reduce.

3. The need for self esteem and self worth

By this I mean you should appreciate yourself and look to your strengths rather than any weakness (we all have both). A strong self esteem gives you a powerful, solid base for dealing with all types of problems and situations.

With a strong self esteem, you have the ability to positively respond or react to any type of situation, rather than reacting negatively by panicking of avoiding the potential conflict.

4. The need to be consistent

You need to know what is likely to happen in any given situation. You need consistency from family, partners, friends, everyone in your life otherwise you are always anxious about the unexpected.

This is not to say that no-one can change their minds but someone who changes opinions or reacts differently to the same situation brings a level of insecurity in to your life and you never know how to react.

The reason some people feel the need to change comes from their insecurity. They are insecure in themselves so they try to fit in with others all the time and will agree with whoever they feel is the most dominant personality.

Whenever any of these needs are not met conflicts, internal, external or both, are produced and people usually react in one of four ways.

They can retaliate, dominate, isolate, or cooperate.

Retaliation and domination can result in extreme violence. Isolation separates the parties but does not resolve the conflict whereas with cooperation one party allows their feelings to be ignored and accepts the opinion of another over their own.

If you are aware of these basic needs and reactions you will begin to understand how and why you and others react the way you do. Considering these needs, understanding them and acting upon them will make you a more complete and therefore a more confident person and will give you strength at times of conflict.

Can Alcohol Cause Depression? https://clicktherapies.com/can-alcohol-cause-depression/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 17:41:09 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51649

At times if increased stress such as a lockdown situation it can be all too tempting to turn to alcohol. This might be to alleviate boredom or to self-medicate your troubles away. Alcohol and depression often appear to go hand in hand. It is all too common for many people to drink alcohol when they are feeling down or are overcome by the stressful events happening in their lives. Unfortunately, any perceived benefit of ‘drowning one’s sorrows’ will be temporary.

Individuals who drink as a method of dealing with their own negative emotions (self-medicating), can be creating long term harm for themselves in the pursuit of short-term relief. If drinking becomes habitual it can wreak havoc emotionally, physically, weakens the immune system and take its toll on family and work. It can also lead to or exacerbate chronic or ongoing depression.

At times of succumbing to the effects of alcohol, whether it be to relax or celebrate, many lose their feelings of being bound or restricted. This relaxed feeling is due to the chemical changes occurring from the alcohol in the brain. This effect has led numerous people to believe that ‘booze’ can help them reduce their anxiety and depression, improve overall confidence and help them to relax.

Alcohol is in fact a depressant, not an anti-depressant. It actually depresses the portion of the brain that is most responsible for conscious thought. This is why it is then easier to forget your immediate problems for the moment, as unwanted feelings and emotions are temporarily suppressed. As a person consumes more and more alcoholic drinks, different areas of the brain become affected. Instead of experiencing more happy feelings, it is common for negative emotional responses including depression, anxiety and anger to take over.

Of course once the alcohol-induced state is gone, the problems remain, often increased in magnitude and too often accompanied by remorse. This then adds to the emotional burdens being dealt with, increasing the symptoms and feelings of depression, and the cycle continues.

If this roller-coaster behaviour is allowed to become a habit, it is usual that both alcohol consumption and symptoms of depression increase. Again, this adds pressure to family, social and work relationships and this pressure contributes to the symptoms associated with depression.

At Click Therapies we realise that many people may turn to alcohol during this time of increased stress. If you are a person who drinks heavily on a consistent basis, you could be at a much higher risk of developing depression symptoms. Therefore, we have developed our online low intensity alcohol interventions protocol based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Alcohol can alter brain chemistry, including lowering the serotonin levels within the brain. Serotonin is one of the brain chemicals that aids in regulating moods. The consumed alcohol which is providing the effect causes chemical imbalances that the body must work hard to metabolize to reduce its damage to the body and the brain. Suffering through the effects a hangover is also not conducive to feelings of happiness and wellbeing.

Relationships can be negatively affected, either by the alcohol drinking or the associated depression. These relationship issues add fuel to the depression fire and so the vicious cycle escalates. Using alcohol to mask symptoms of depression is very common. Avoidance of confronting the problem directly is almost as common.

Solutions are available, they require personal courage and usually support from loved ones. It is in the interests of both those engaged in harmful use and others affected by the effects of habitual drinking to seek help. Too many lives and relationships have been damaged and even destroyed by the twin problems of depression and alcohol.

Visit www.clicktherapies.com to find out how you can book a 15 minute FREE consultation if you have concerns about alcohol or live with someone you care about. Click Therapies Online Low Intensity Interventions for Harmful Alcohol Use is a tried and tested therapeutic intervention.

Stress Techniques That Might Help https://clicktherapies.com/stress-techniques-that-might-help/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 17:38:13 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51638

Stress and Anxiety

Stress is the mind and body’s reaction to external stimuli and can be positive or negative. Events which create feelings of ‘pressure’ often result in negative or damaging effects, especially over time. If you are constantly battling high stress and anxiety situations, you need to find ways to reduce your stress levels before it causes a serious health issue.

Reducing your stress levels is a must especially if you want to keep your whole body healthy. Stress and anxiety affect your mind and physical wellbeing, so it’s important to reduce the levels of stress you experience.

Below are examples of stress relieving techniques that have helped others:

Autogenic Training

This type of relaxation method uses a technique where you perform visualisations while maintaining a relaxed posture and telling parts of body to feel a certain way. The effect is to illicit a heavy and relaxed feeling while inducing a positive effect in the autonomic nervous system. For example, you may say something like “my arms feel heavy and I am completely calm”. You must repeat the process several times for each part of the body you give your focus to, as you allow all the parts of your body to feel relaxed and calm. Autogenic training is a structured method of relaxation which is best performed under the supervision of an expert.

Before starting your autogenic training, you must prepare your body with deep diaphragmatic breathing. Autogenic training can have long term benefits and once you have familiarised yourself with its structure, you can then perform the sessions in the comfort of your own home or workplace.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Many people use the Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique. This is a method of relaxation that involves tightening several muscle groups and then relaxing them. You will only need fifteen minutes of your time everyday to be able to perform this activity. As you regularly perform exercises that allow your muscles to “tighten and release” it becomes easier for your body to be relaxed. Thus, you will be able to reduce not only your anxiety and stress levels but also your risk of developing serious anxiety disorders.

You may think that you are too busy to find other methods to help you cope with the increasing levels of stress and anxiety that your body is experiencing but in reality it can be an easy thing to do.

Nobody deserves to suffer from excess stress and anxiety, but our frantic modern lifestyles can make it difficult to avoid along with the current stress of a prolonged lock-down situation. Thankfully there is now a strong public awareness of the dangers of excessive negative stress, in addition to well-documented coping mechanisms. Help is available to those who are battling with these symptoms.

4-Stress Reducing Tips https://clicktherapies.com/4-stress-reducing-tips/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 17:31:57 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51632

Stress has always been a part of our lives. In this difficult time, people lead an increasingly stressful life. Experts state that a little stress can be good; it keeps you sharp and ready to move forward and is sometimes vital for achieving optimum performance. However, medical research has determined that prolonged stress is very bad for the body, and can block the body’s natural ability to repair, regenerate and protect itself. Stress is both a physical and psychological response. It can lead to chronic disease, obesity, insomnia, deteriorating relationships, depression, and more.

Stress is such a powerful and harmful force that it is vital to your wellbeing that you learn effective stress management techniques to live a successful, happy, and healthy life. We must remember that we will always come across inevitable factors that cause pressure and anxiety on us. What we do not know is that it is not really the problems that are difficult to deal with, but our attitude towards them. So basically, the cause of stress is your attitude toward these things. What, then, is an effective way to deal with stressors?

Below are 4 great tips to handle stress.

1. Identify what makes you stressful and uneasy.Making a list of your stressful experiences is useful. Immediately deal with the issues that you can change, for instance waking up earlier for work in the morning, not leaving things till the last minute, and delegating tasks in case you are taking responsibility for everything. Forget about the issues that you cannot influence like being stuck in a traffic jam or not getting into the elevator because there is no room for you.

2. Relax and Calm Down. A few minutes break would do you good. Wash your face, breath slowly and deeply, and notice if there is tension in any part of your body and release it. You can also listen to relaxing music or call a friend. Releasing your feelings to a friend is another healthy option.

3. Notice that It will pass. it will be over before you know it. Reminding yourself that the stressful event will end sooner or later can make you see the positive sides of things. At the same time, calm down your emotions and think of what the best thing is to do rather than take your energy away from what needs to be done.

4. Know yourself. Ask yourself: What triggers my anxiety? If for example it is your job, then maybe it’s time for you to reconsider whether it would be best to find a less stressful job. You can also make your job more tolerable by allowing yourself to get that needed holiday or even a few days off. If it is the home environment, maybe that too needs to be factored in and look at routines that may need to change or even established.

The true causes of stress are not the problems or negative experiences that you encounter in your life; but your attitude towards them. So, the trick is to change your attitude and to develop a relaxed state, because you cannot be stressed and relaxed at the same time. It is important to understand that what we focus on, we energise. The more you continue to think about the factors that cause your stress, the more energy you give to it. it is therefore vital for your wellbeing to let go and focus on relaxation instead. Consequently, you’re less likely to be upset by a stressor, and thus less likely to have its harmful effect re-occur. Eventually, it is your choice. You could either continue to react in the same stressful way, or you could choose to improve your life by changing your attitude and learning relaxation.

The Stress of Working From Home https://clicktherapies.com/the-stress-of-working-from-home/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 17:29:54 +0000 https://clicktherapies.com/?p=51627

What is working at home, and coping with stress, really all about? The following article includes some fascinating information about working at home, and stress –info you can use.

Most of us have been stressed by working at home at some point. Aside from the stress of having to find new clients and new jobs, we often encounter stress because jobs come in mad, occasional bursts. Some days your to-do list is almost empty, and the following days it seems like we can hardly keep up.

Deadlines can be overwhelming, and when one is affected, effectiveness plunges. The brain is no longer focused on creativity and action.

When stress levels stack up, here is what to do. First, reduce stress by… Stopping. It sounds a bit basic, and it is hard to do, just stop. Stress can cause health problems or make problems worse if you do not learn ways to deal with it.

The next step is to find a way to deal with your stress. A simple way is to avoid the circumstance that leads to our stress–but often this is not feasible. Another way is to change how we react to stress. This is often the best way.

Well, it’s time to take heart and set a few simple strategies in place that will keep us in control of our time…and our mind.

Tips for dealing with working at home stress-

1) Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Reduce or eliminate caffeine (coffee, black and green tea, fizzy drinks, and chocolate). Because caffeine is a stimulant, it can make you feel more anxious.

2) Exercise. It relieves tension and provides a timeout from stressful situations.

3) Try to take time every day to slow down and do something you enjoy, even if it is just for a few minutes. Reading an article, playing with your dog, listening to music, reading a book or any other activity that helps you forget the stresses of your day can calm you and help you remember what is important.

4) Work at being cheerful and optimistic. Use humour to lighten difficult situations.

5) Take slow and long, relaxing deep breaths anytime you notice you’re feeling stressed.

6) If the nature of any of your tasks allows it, call upon a colleague who can help you. If you have never done this before, now is the perfect time to start. The nice thing about this sort of arrangement is your colleague will most likely send jobs your way when he or she gets overloaded and visa versa (following an initial chat about it).

7) Organising and simplifying your life. If one of your main sources of stress is the sheer number of things that need to be done, getting organised should help you feel more at peace. A good sense of organisation will also make you more efficient. Simplifying your life also should help you feel less overwhelmed.

Set Achievable Daily Goals. If you finish a task ahead of schedule, start the next… but stick to a definite cut-off time each day. What you are doing this week is setting up a system that will continue to work for you.

Follow these tips and before you know it, your homework-life will be on track once again.

That is how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest developments. Click Therapies can help with this by providing you with a short burst of stress management strategies.
